Carry-On Only for 3 Weeks of Eastern Europe Trains: 4 Packing Essentials

Three weeks across Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania by train can fit in one carry-on if you settle four things before you pack: passport validity, country-by-country rail passes, your airline's bag limit, and local currency. None of those four countries uses the euro.

  • Passport valid 3+ months past your exit date and issued within the last 10 years
  • One Country Passes for each country, plus seat reservations for night trains
  • A cabin bag checked against your airline's current limit
  • Złoty, koruna, forint and leu, not euros

1. Passport: check the 10-year rule and biometric entry

Non-EU passport holders need a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date they plan to leave the EU, and it must have been issued within the last 10 years, measured on the day of entry. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System is fully operational at external Schengen borders, so expect fingerprints and a facial image at your first crossing. Check the full rules on the official Your Europe page.

2. Rail passes: buy one per country

Interrail's One Country Passes cover Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania separately, and each covers only its home country. Most run for one month with a set number of travel days, and you must start using the pass within 11 months of purchase. Local trains need no booking, but night and international trains need a small-fee seat reservation, so book those legs early.

3. Cabin bag: check the limit before you pack

Budget carriers enforce cabin size strictly, and limits vary by airline and fare. Look up your carrier's current rules, such as the Wizz Air cabin baggage page, before you buy packing cubes and fill the bag.

4. Money: local currency and a card with no FX fee

Poland uses the złoty, Czechia the koruna, Hungary the forint and Romania the leu. Carry a card with no foreign transaction fee, plus a backup card, and avoid airport exchange kiosks. See the European Commission's list of euro countries to confirm which currency applies where you're going.

People also ask

How long does my passport need to be valid for Schengen travel?

Non-EU nationals generally need a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date they plan to leave the Schengen area, and issued within the previous 10 years. Travellers should check the official EU travel document guidance before booking, since rules can change.

Do I need a seat reservation on Eastern European night trains?

Usually yes. Rail passes cover most local and regional trains without booking, but high-speed, international and night trains require a seat reservation for a small additional fee. Reserve early for popular overnight routes, and check each rail operator's timetable, because availability on night services is limited.

What currencies are used in Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania?

Poland uses the złoty, Czechia the Czech koruna, Hungary the forint and Romania the leu. None of these four countries is in the euro area. The European Commission lists current euro-area members, which helps you plan exchange and card use.
