Is Mexico City actually worth leaving the airport for on a layover?

I keep seeing people recommend quick city trips during a layover in Mexico City, but I am not sure when that is genuinely worth it versus just creating extra airport anxiety.

What makes me consider it is strong regional connectivity and lots of domestic options. What makes me hesitate is altitude fatigue on messy itineraries.

For people who have done it in real life, what is the minimum stop length where Mexico City becomes fun instead of rushed?

Mexico City can be worth it, but only when you treat the layover like a single focused outing instead of a checklist sprint.

The question is less “can you leave?” and more whether altitude fatigue on messy itineraries is likely to destroy the return margin on the day you travel.

I usually want one signature food stop or one neighborhood walk, then I head back much earlier than feels necessary.

If your tolerance for uncertainty is low, staying inside Benito Juarez may honestly be the better trip decision.
