I'm confused about the Schengen visa rules. Can someone explain like I'm 5?
You can spend 90 days in Schengen zone in any 180-day rolling window.
It's a rolling count, not calendar based. Use a calculator online.
Non-Schengen EU countries (Croatia was, Romania, etc) have separate limits.
If you overstay, you could be banned. Take it seriously.
