Private Cooking and Dining Experience in Bengaluru

Experience a genuine immersion into local Indian culture with your native host in Bengaluru — a personal, family-style welcome that sets this activity apart from a typical cooking class. Start with an optional visit to a local market with your host, where you'll hand-pick the fresh vegetables, spices, and herbs for your meal and see firsthand why freshness matters in Indian cooking. Then customize your hands-on culinary experience: choose from dishes like mavinakai chitranna (tangy raw mango rice), Chettinad chicken curry, or sambar, spanning different regional flavors and techniques rather than following a fixed menu. Your native host shares genuine insights into Indian cooking and culture throughout, so you leave not just with recipes, but with real stories, techniques, and a taste of authentic Bengaluru hospitality.

Guided Walk through Bengaluru's Ejipura Slums

Join Bengaluru high schooler Dia Z. Panakkat on a walk through Ejipura slums - perhaps Bengaluru's largest disadvantaged neighborhood. The challenges of poor infrastructure, unchecked development, and large scale urban migration come to focus here. Poverty and associated effects are all around. Yet, this is also a place where the human spirit triumphs over adversity. We will stop at the Swabhimaan community center - where children of all ages from the neighborhood come for curricular tuitions and after school programs. We will then stop at the Swabhimaan Clinic - where doctors consult and distribute medicines for an all inclusive price of Rs. 10 (12 cents) per visit. Finally we will stop by at the Swabhimaan grocery distribution center where free staples are served to the most in need. Dia and another Swabhimaan volunteer will walk you through the sites. All proceeds are given back to people in the community through Swabhimaan Trust, a non-profit working in Ejipura since 2002.

8 AM- We meet for breakfast at an old eatery, renowned for its traditional South Indian dishes. The dosa here is highly recommended. After a sumptuous traditional breakfast we walk to the local market. The market is a riot of colors as the street vendors peddle flowers, vegetables, fruits, clothes, household items, trinkets, handicrafts, utensils. Next in our Bangalore walk we will visit a famous Silk Saree shop which is the city’s choicest destination for purchase of silk sarees for big occasions like weddings.

Attraction stop (30 mins)

We walk to a temple called Kadu Malleswara, after which the neighborhood has been named. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is a splendid specimen for the Dravidian style of architecture and was built by Venkoji Rao Bhosle, the brother of the great Maratha King Shivaji.

Attraction stop (30 mins)

Our next destination in this Bangalore walk is a far more ancient temple called Nandeeswara. This ancient temple was lost to the world for many years and was excavated only recently by archeologists. The local people here says this temple is more than 7000 years old! The temple is full of mysteries. A steady stream of water from unknown sources runs from the mouth of the statue of Nandi bull to the statue of a Shiva Linga a little below it. There are many turtles to be met at this temple!

Attraction stop (15 mins)

Our walk takes us to Sankey Tank, an important source of drinking water for Bangalore. Built 1882 by Madras Sappers Regiment, Sankey Tank is very popular today among the walkers and joggers.

Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Basavanna, each representing India’s rich political and social legacy. Next, view Vikasa Soudha, a modern extension symbolizing administrative progress. Finally, marvel at the red colonial-style Karnataka High Court, or Attara Kacheri, facing Vidhana Soudha and representing justice. This tour offers a rich blend of history, architecture, and leadership all in one inspiring stroll.

On the way to our next stop, you’ll catch an outside view of the historic Bangalore Fort. Originally built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I as a mud fort and later reinforced with stone by Hyder Ali in the 18th century, this fort once marked the stronghold of the Mysore rulers. Though much of it was dismantled during British rule, the remaining bastions and gate stand as silent witnesses to the city’s military past. Your guide will point it out and share the fort’s role in Bengaluru’s strategic and political history.

Attraction stop (15 mins)

Our next stop is the sacred Dodda Ganapathi Temple in Basavanagudi, one of Bengaluru’s oldest neighborhoods. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is famous for its massive monolithic idol, which is about 18 feet high and 16 feet wide. According to legend, the idol was discovered in the 16th century during the reign of Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bengaluru. Over the years, the temple has become a cherished spiritual site for devotees seeking blessings for new beginnings and the removal of obstacles. Half-Day Private British Heritage Tour with Lunch

The legacy of over 150 years of British presence in Bangalore is hard to miss if you are in the city. For example, the broad roads laid out over 200 years ago for horse carriages, bullock carts, and horsemen do a fine job of carrying the chaotic traffic of this day too. This is a half-day tour in a sedan/minivan and lasts about 5 hours

Getting Around During Your Layover

Navigating from Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) to the city is most efficient via the BMTC 'Vayu Vajra' AC buses, which run 24/7 on various routes. For a more direct trip, use app-based ride-sharing services like Ola or Uber, which have dedicated pickup zones. Official Airport Taxis (KSTDC) are also readily available. Note that while a Metro line to the airport is under construction, it is currently not operational; travelers usually take a bus or taxi to the nearest Metro station (like Indiranagar or MG Road) to bypass inner-city traffic.

Good to Know

Practical Tips for Bangalore Layovers

01

Always account for Bangalore's unpredictable traffic; a 40km trip can take anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours.

02

Utilize the left-luggage facility (Cloak Room) at the airport if you plan to head into the city.

03

Carry a light jacket as Bangalore's weather is pleasantly cool but can get chilly in the evenings.

04

Download the Ola or Uber apps for transparent pricing on rides.

05

If you have a short layover (under 5 hours), stay at 'The Quad' just outside the terminal to avoid traffic risks.

06

Ensure you have an Indian e-Tourist Visa if you plan to exit the airport (depending on your nationality).

07

Keep local currency (Indian Rupee) for small purchases, though cards are widely accepted in the city.

08

Stay hydrated and stick to bottled water throughout your visit.

Does anyone know if immigration is fast at this airport during morning hours? We only have a 4 hour layover and want to see the main square...

Just did this exact layover last week! A few tips: definitely take the express train instead of cab, it saves about 45 mins. Also make sure...

Make Every Minute Count

Managing Your Layover Time

For layovers of 2-4 hours, we recommend staying within the airport or enjoying the amenities at 'The Quad by BLR' located right outside the terminal. For 4-8 hours, you have enough time to visit Nandi Hills (if your layover is early morning) or head to a nearby tech hub like Whitefield for a meal at a microbrewery. If you have 8+ hours, you can comfortably venture into the city center to see the Bangalore Palace, Lalbagh Gardens, and enjoy a traditional meal at MTR, provided you leave the city at least 4 hours before your departure to handle potential traffic.
