The Mercado Central is one of Belo Horizonte’s most traditional landmarks and a living portrait of Minas Gerais culture. Founded in 1929, it gathers more than 400 small shops under one roof, offering everything from regional cheeses and sweets to spices, handmade crafts, and local beverages. You'll walk through its narrow corridors surrounded by colorful stalls, observe local vendors preparing snacks such as pão de queijo and pastel de carne, and experience the daily rhythm of a true Brazilian market.

The Mercado Novo is a revitalized cultural and gastronomic hub in downtown Belo Horizonte, blending the city’s historic charm with its new creative energy. Originally built in the 1960s as a wholesale market, it has been transformed into a lively space where food, music, art, and design coexist.

We will tell the story of the foundation of Belo Horizonte, in 1701, and why a city in the middle of the hinterland has the protection of the patron saint of sailors and travelers. We will learn about the history of the ancient village of Curral del Rei and a cemetery that has been forgotten by time. Afterwards, we will visit the interior of the temple.

We'll talk about the first streets of Belo Horizonte, the planned capital, and how the current Avenida João Pinheiro was a fundamental part of the city. We will talk about several historic mansions on the avenue and also the lives of writers who passed through Belo Horizonte, such as Fernando Sabino, Carlos Drummond, Aníbal Machado and Afonso Arinos. We will not enter the museum, we will only be in the entrance hall.

Better known as the Pope's square, it is located on the top of a hill, next to the Mangabeiras Park, where it serves as a belvedere to appreciate the immensity of the city with its buildings. People go there to enjoy nature, see the city, spend a quiet day, away from the chaotic traffic of the capital.

The Parque das Mangabeiras was designed by the famous landscape gardener Roberto Burle Marx and preserves, in its area of 2,8 million square meters, 21 sources of the Córrego da Serra, that takes part on the São Francisco river basin . The fauna meets 28 mammalian species, 160 birds, 20 reptiles and 19 amphibia.

From one of the highest points in Belo Horizonte, in 1980, Pope John Paul II looked back and saw intact mountains and, ahead, a city as far as the eye could see. Before celebrating mass in the square that would be named in his honor, he uttered a brief interjection: "what a beautiful horizon! It couldn't be any different. From the upper part of the capital it is possible to have a notion of the dimension and beauties that compose it and, for those who don't know, the Mirante do Mangabeiras is the perfect place for those who want to get to know BH better.
