Layover Guide
A layover in Dushanbe (DYU) offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Central Asia's most rapidly evolving capitals. Unlike the massive hubs found in our London Layover Guide, Dushanbe International Airport is conveniently located just 5 kilometers from the city center, making it a vital hub connecting Central Asia to the world. Whether you are arriving from a long journey or just passing through, you can easily track your flight path on Borderly to see exactly where you are in the Pamir mountain range. While Dushanbe may not have the transit volume of a Singapore Layover Guide, its proximity to grand parks, neoclassical architecture, and vibrant bazaars makes it a traveler's favorite for short bursts of exploration. Before heading out, be sure to check Dushanbe travel reviews on TripAdvisor to find the latest local hotspots and cultural events happening during your stay.

The Museum is proud to own artifacts of the Eneolithic and Bronze Age from the agricultural settlement of Sarazm, site included in the UNESCO World heritage list. The finds dating from the Hellenistic period coming from the Oxus Temple, excavated at the site of Takhti Sangin on the banks of the Amu Darya River are unique. A portrait of Alexander the Great in the image of Hercules, the Akinakes scabbard, a plate depicting hunting scenes and other items made of ivory are masterpieces of world art. Finds from the Oxus temple are an illustrative example of the synthesis of two cultures the local and ancient Greek. The wall paintings from ancient Penjikent (5th – 7th C), presented in the Museum are included in the Golden Fund of world culture. Buddhists from many countries worldwide make the pilgrimage to one of the most striking sights of the Museum, the "Buddha in Nirvana", almost 13-metre statue made of clay, which is today one of the largest ancient monument of Buddhism in the world.

Dushanbe is a compact city, and taxis are the most efficient way to travel from DYU. Official taxis wait outside the terminal; expect to pay between 30 and 50 TJS ($3-$5 USD) for a trip to the center. For a more modern experience, use the 'Yak Taxi' or 'Sayokhat' apps, which work similarly to Uber. Marshrutkas (minibuses) also run along Rudaki Avenue for a fraction of the cost, but they can be crowded and difficult for those with luggage. Before you head out, make sure to track your flight path on Borderly to ensure you have enough time for the return trip.
Good to Know
Check visa requirements: Most nationalities need a TJS e-visa, though some transit rules may apply.
Currency: The local currency is the Somoni (TJS). ATMs are available at the airport and in the city center.
Language: Tajik is official, but Russian is widely understood. English is limited in shops.
Safety: Dushanbe is generally safe, but keep an eye on belongings in crowded bazaars.
Connectivity: Buy a local Megafon or Tcell SIM card at the airport if you need data for your layover.
Dress Code: While Dushanbe is secular, modest dress is recommended when visiting religious sites.
Timing: Peak traffic in Dushanbe is from 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM.
Cash is king: While some high-end restaurants accept cards, carry cash for taxis and bazaars.
