Lisbon, the sun-drenched capital of /portugal, offers one of the most convenient layover experiences in Europe. Unlike many major hubs, Lisbon Airport (LIS) is located remarkably close to the city center—just 7 kilometers north. This proximity means that even a short stopover allows travelers to glimpse the city's tiled facades, taste world-famous pastries, and breathe in the Atlantic breeze. Whether you are navigating through Lisbon Airport (LIS) for a few hours or a full day, this guide ensures you spend less time in transit and more time exploring the 'City of Seven Hills'.

Although we can fully customise the walking route, here are some highlights - Alfama is one of the oldest districts in Lisbon, showing how the city was organised back to the 16th century. It is a long list of hidden places, local people, laundry hanging and some very good views. Mouraria is a fascinating old district in Lisbon. GETTING AROUND

Getting Around During Your Layover

Lisbon offers excellent transit options. The Metro (Red Line) is the most efficient way to get from Lisbon Airport (LIS) to the city center; change at Alameda for the Green Line or São Sebastião for the Blue Line. Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber and Bolt are readily available and relatively inexpensive. For those heading to the Belém area, the suburban train from Cais do Sodré or the 15E tram are the best options. If you prefer a direct route to the business district, the Aerobus offers frequent shuttle services.

Pro Tips for a Lisbon Layover

01Check if your airline offers a free stopover program for longer stays.

02The Metro runs from 06:30 to 01:00; if your flight is very early or late, use a taxi.

03Wear comfortable walking shoes; Lisbon's 'calçada' (cobblestone) can be slippery.

04Validate your Viva Viagem card every time you enter a station or board a bus.

05Most museums are closed on Mondays, so plan your activities accordingly.

06Keep a light jacket handy; the breeze from the Tagus River can be cool even in summer.

07Use the luggage storage (Left Luggage) at Terminal 1 Arrivals for convenience.

08English is widely spoken in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Inside the terminal

Airports in Lisbon

LIS

Lisbon Airport (LIS)

Take advantage of the 'Left Luggage' facility in the Arrivals hall to explore the city hands-free. The Red Line Metro connects directly to the airport, reaching the city center in approximately 20-25 minutes. If you have a short layover of less than 3 hours, consider staying in the nearby Parque das Nações district instead of heading to the historic center.

Shopping Destinations

Centro Vasco da Gama

5 km

A large, modern shopping center located just 5 minutes from the airport by metro or taxi.

Avenida da Liberdade

9 km

Lisbon's main luxury boulevard featuring international high-end designers.

Armazéns do Chiado

10 km

A popular shopping mall in the heart of the historic district.

Feira da Ladra

10 km

The famous 'Thieves Market' (flea market) held on Tuesdays and Saturdays in Alfama.

Make every minute count

Managing Your Layover Time

With a 2-4 hour layover, we recommend staying within Lisbon Airport (LIS) or taking a 5-minute taxi to Parque das Nações to enjoy the waterfront and the Oceanário. For a 4-8 hour layover, you have enough time to take the Metro to Baixa or Chiado, enjoy a traditional meal, and explore the Alfama district. If your layover is 8+ hours, you can comfortably add a trip to Belém to see the tower and monastery, or even head to the hills of Sintra if you use a private transfer.

Things people ask at the gate.

Do I need a visa for a layover in Lisbon?

Portugal is part of the Schengen Area. Depending on your nationality, you may need a Schengen Visa to exit the airport. Check current regulations before traveling.

Is there luggage storage at Lisbon Airport?

Yes, there is a 24-hour Left Luggage service located in the Arrivals area of Terminal 1.

How long does it take to get to the city center?

By Metro, it takes about 20-25 minutes. By taxi or ride-share, it can take 15-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Which terminal does my flight use?

Terminal 1 is the main terminal for international and full-service airlines. Terminal 2 is used primarily by low-cost carriers (accessible via a free shuttle from Terminal 1).

Is Lisbon Airport open at night?

Yes, the airport is open 24/7, though most shops and restaurants close late at night.

Can I see the Belém Tower on a 4-hour layover?

It is tight. Belém is on the opposite side of the city from the airport. We recommend at least a 6-hour layover to visit Belém comfortably.

What is the best way to pay for transport?

Buy a 'Viva Viagem' card at any Metro station and load it with 'Zapping' credit for the most flexibility across buses, trams, and trains.

SHORT ON TIME?
