Layover Guide

The Ultimate Sofia (Sredets)

Sofia, the ancient and vibrant capital of Bulgaria, is one of Europe's most underrated stopover destinations. If you find yourself with a layover at Sofia Airport (SOF), you have a unique opportunity to explore layers of history ranging from Roman ruins to Byzantine churches. Unlike the sprawling transit hubs featured in our Dubai Layover Guide or London Layover Guide, Sofia is compact and remarkably easy to navigate. Before you land, make sure to track your flight path on Borderly to visualize your journey over the Balkan Peninsula. Whether you are coming from a long-haul flight or a short hop, Sofia's city center is just a short metro ride away, offering a stark contrast to the standard airport terminal experience. For more regional context, explore our guide to Bulgaria. Similar to the efficiency found in our Singapore Layover Guide, Sofia’s Metro Line 4 connects Terminal 2 directly to the heart of the city in under 30 minutes.

Getting Around Sofia

Sofia is highly accessible. The most efficient method is Metro Line 4, which connects Terminal 2 to the city center (Serdica) in about 25-30 minutes for 1.60 BGN (~$0.90). For Terminal 1, use the free shuttle to T2 first. Taxis are affordable; use only 'O.K. Supertrans' to avoid scams—a ride to the center costs roughly 20-30 BGN ($11-$16). Ride-sharing is not currently served by Uber or Lyft, but the local app 'TaxiMe' is a great alternative. For travelers tracking their global transit, track your flight path on Borderly to see how SOF fits into your air travel network.

Make Every Minute Count

Mastering Your Time in Sofia

To make the most of your Sofia stopover, aim for at least a 4-hour window if you plan to leave the airport. The Metro is the most reliable way to avoid Sofia’s frequent traffic jams. From Terminal 2, the metro takes exactly 28 minutes to reach Serdica (the absolute center). Add 15 minutes for walking and 15 minutes for the shuttle if you are in T1. Always check Sofia travel reviews on TripAdvisor for real-time updates on museum hours or construction.
