Mid-Day & Sunset Sailing on Seattle's Majestic Puget Sound

Mid-Day & Sunset Sailing on Seattle's Majestic Puget Sound

Experience the magic of being carried by the wind, just as Peter Puget was when he mapped these waters back in 1792. From Seattle’s Shilshole Bay Marina we sail west across Puget Sound toward the magnificent Olympic Mountains. Along the way we will watch for orcas, schools of our local porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, great blue herons, and other wildlife. On the Sunset Cruise, we’ll enjoy the light show as the sun drops behind the well-named Mount Olympus and other peaks in the Olympic Range and illuminates feathery horizon clouds into glorious colors. Captain Grant, who holds a 100-ton Master of Inland Waters License from the U.S. Coast Guard, is dedicated to sharing the joy of being on the water with others. A former reporter for the Seattle Times, former Science and Medical writer for the Associated Press, and author of four books (one of which was named one of the year’s 10 Best nonfiction books by the American Library Association) Grant is a natural story teller.

DCA is very close to the city; a 4-hour layover is often enough to see a monument or two.

02

Use the Metro to avoid heavy traffic on I-395 and the 14th Street Bridge.

Store your luggage at the airport if available, or use third-party apps like Radical Storage downtown.

04

TSA PreCheck is highly recommended at DCA during peak business travel hours.

05

Check the Smithsonian website for timed entry requirements before you leave the airport.

06

The airport offers free Wi-Fi and several charging stations throughout the terminals.

07

Download the SmarTrip app for seamless Metro fare payment.

Just did this exact layover last week! A few tips: definitely take the express train instead of cab, it saves about 45 mins. Also make sure...

Make Every Minute Count

Time Management Guidance

For a 2-4 hour layover, stay at DCA; enjoy the views of the Potomac and dine at National Hall. For a 4-8 hour layover, take the Metro to the Smithsonian station. You can visit one museum or walk from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. For layovers longer than 8 hours, consider a full day trip exploring Capitol Hill, having lunch at The Wharf, and ending with a stroll through Georgetown before heading back for your flight.
