The Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church was built in Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar city) in the place where the biggest slave market of Eastern Africa operated Outside the Cathedral, there is a stone monument showing four people enchained by their necks as a way of reproducing the way in which slaves were offered to buyers. The trade of slaves was the main activity and it commercially linked Europeans (who used slaves for plantations in the Indian Ocean) with African rulers. By the 19th century, the Zanzibar Sultanate stood out for being the main slave market in Eastern Africa due to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean. It is estimated that between 1830 and 1873, around 600,000 people were sold as merchandise and thousands of other people visited the place temporarily.

Is an important historical building located in the Baghani area of Stone Town, Zanzibar. It was built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898, and the plans were drawn by the same French architect who designed the cathedral in Marseilles, France. The defining characteristic of the cathedral are its twin spires (similar to those of Marseille’s church) which are prominent elements of the Stone Town’s skyline and can be easily spotted from a distance off the coast. The cathedral interior is painted with murals from the Old Testament. The tiles and stained glass windows were all imported from France. The cathedral is in regular use by Stone Town’s Catholic community. There are several masses held each Sunday and occasionally on weekdays.

GETTING AROUND

Getting Around During Your Layover

Navigating transit from Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) to the city center is straightforward due to the short distance of approximately 5 to 8 kilometers. Taxis are the most common and reliable method for tourists, with a typical one-way fare to Stone Town ranging between 10 and 15 USD. It is essential to negotiate and agree on the price before starting your journey, as meters are rarely used. For those seeking a truly local experience, the Dala-dala (Route 505) operates frequently from the main road just outside the airport gates. This shared minibus costs between 500 and 1,000 TZS (roughly 0.20 to 0.40 USD) and takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on stops. Private transfers can be pre-booked for approximately 15 to 25 USD, offering a more personalized and seamless arrival. While ride-sharing apps are not currently a standard option in Zanzibar, many local hotels offer shuttle services. Always allow at least 15 to 20 minutes for the drive back to the airport during peak hours. If you are on a tight schedule, a taxi is always the preferred choice to ensure you return in time for your flight. Using public transport can be an adventure, but taxis offer the peace of mind required for strict layover schedules.

Expert Tips for a Zanzibar Stopover

01Purchase a transit visa for 30 USD if you plan to exit the terminal building.
02Carry small denominations of USD or Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) for taxi fares.
03Dress modestly when visiting Stone Town to respect local cultural norms and traditions.
04Use the Marhaba Lounge in Terminal 3 if you need a shower or Wi-Fi.
05Negotiate taxi fares before getting into the car to avoid overpaying at the destination.
06Allow extra time for security checks during peak evening departure hours at ZNZ.
07Track your visit to Tanzania by uploading your boarding pass to the Borderly platform.

Zanzibar Layover Itineraries

Managing your time during a Zanzibar layover depends heavily on the length of your stay and your visa status. For a short 2 to 4 hour layover, it is best to remain at Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) or visit the very nearby Mbweni Ruins, located only 10 minutes away. This allows you to see 19th-century history and botanical gardens without the risk of missing your flight. If you have a 4 to 8 hour window, you should secure a 30 USD transit visa and head directly to Stone Town. This duration is perfect for a guided walking tour through the narrow streets, a visit to the Freddie Mercury Museum, and a quick lunch at a local spot like Lukmaan. For layovers exceeding 8 hours, you can expand your itinerary to include a boat trip to Prison Island to see the Giant Aldabra tortoises. This excursion typically takes 3 hours in total from the Stone Town port. You can then finish your day with a sunset dinner at Forodhani Gardens before returning to the airport. Always ensure you are back at the terminal 2 hours before an international departure to clear customs and security efficiently. Planning your exit from the airport requires checking the latest visa requirements on arrival.

Things people ask at the gate.

Are there showers at Zanzibar Airport?

Yes, showers are available within the Marhaba Lounge located in Terminal 3. Access to this lounge typically costs around 40 USD, providing a comfortable place for international travelers to freshen up between long-haul flights while enjoying snacks, beverages, and high-speed Wi-Fi access.

What should I wear during a Zanzibar layover?

Travelers should dress modestly when leaving the airport to explore Stone Town or other local areas. Since Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim society, it is respectful to cover shoulders and knees, especially when visiting local markets, religious sites, or the historic streets of the old city.

How do I get from the airport to the city cheaply?

The most budget-friendly way to reach the city is by taking the Route 505 Dala-dala. These local minibuses pick up passengers on the main road outside the airport gates and cost about 0.40 USD, though they can be crowded and take longer than a private taxi.

What is the currency used in Zanzibar?

The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars are widely accepted for larger purchases, tours, and transit visas. It is advisable to carry some local currency for small purchases at markets like Darajani or for paying the low Dala-dala fares.

Is there a hotel inside Zanzibar Airport?

There is no hotel directly inside the terminal building, but the Golden Tulip Zanzibar Airport Hotel is located only 500 meters away. They offer day rooms and a swimming pool, which are ideal for travelers with long daytime layovers who need to rest comfortably.

Can I visit the Freddie Mercury Museum on a layover?

Yes, the Freddie Mercury Museum is located in the heart of Stone Town and is easily accessible during a 4 hour layover. Entry costs 10 USD and the museum provides a fascinating look at the legendary singer's early life in his childhood home on the island.

Is Stone Town safe for a solo traveler?

Stone Town is generally safe for solo travelers during daylight hours, although it is important to stay aware of your surroundings in the narrow, winding alleys. Hiring a local guide can enhance safety, help you avoid getting lost, and provide deeper insight into the history.
